Tips and tricks for newcomers in DayZ

• Don’t play with your stomach 

We decided to put this first just in case you’re a big fan of shooter games where all you care about is weapons and ammo. You need to keep your character well fed in survival games, and DayZ is not an exception. However, how you go about your edibles is of more importance.

First off, you’ll need to know where to find food and how to gain access to the food in question. You’ll find food in DayZ scattered across the map, living houses, cars, or dead bodies you come across (if they’ve not been looted before your arrival). 

If you’re not strong enough to face the common fights in these areas, we recommend searching boats or trees for fruits. If you stumble on canned foods, you’ll need any tool such as a knife, screwdriver, or even can openers. Using an ax to open your canned food will spill some of the food. 

• Water is equally as important.

Just like hunger and thirst walk hand-in-hand in real life, the same applies to DayZ. However, allowing your character to dehydrate comes with more consequences than hunger. When you go thirsty, you lose double the amount of blood and 5 times the amount of health than when you starve.

You go down in your water level mostly when you’re caught in a fight, or you get badly injured during a fight. You can use items such as sodas, Nota Cola, and lemonades to quench your thirst. However, water is still the best in quenching your thirst, but above all, it must be clean. We recommend well water as it is considered the cleanest.

• Interacting with others

You’ll surely run into other players in DayZ. The unsettling part of such encounters is that there is no way to tell if they’re friends or foes. The best way to go about them is by trying to make them friends. 

If you manage to make them friends, you’ll have a bigger defense if you’re faced with tough fights. However, you must always stay alert as you don’t know if they’ll turn out to be backstabbers in the future. 

• You’ll create your tools.

You’ll be on the game for a better part of the beginning without coming across a readymade weapon. When you’re just starting the game, you might get to stumble on a pickaxe or a crowbar. If you chanced on a pickaxe and a knife, lucky you!

This is because you’ll need a knife to open canned foods before eating them. The knife is preferable for opening canned foods because it spills the smallest amount of food. Also, you can use the pickaxe to mine for rocks and other items, which you’ll need as you proceed in the game.

• Keep off the coastline.

Since you’re just starting the game, you don’t have adequate weapons to protect yourself against rogue players. Therefore, we advise you to keep off environments that are threatening. The coastline is one very dangerous place to play without sufficient defense.

You’ll need to get yourself some food and water, then basic tools or weapons as soon as you can. Later on, you can continue your search in military bases and airfields for more advanced guns such as the AK-47 or M4s. However, you must be on the lookout for rogue players in these locations.
