Young man, 20, arrested after woman killed in Penrith hit-and-run

A driver has been arrested after a woman was killed in a hit-and-run in Sydney’s west.

The woman, believed to be aged in her 60s, was struck by an orange dual-cab ute on Macquarie Avenue in Penrith at about 5.30pm on Thursday.

Vision from the scene shows the vehicle pausing briefly before driving off without offering help.

Paramedics treated the woman for life-threatening injuries; however, she could not be revived and died at the scene.

She is yet to be formally identified, but police believe she was a visitor to Australia rather than a citizen.

A crime scene was established, with forensic teams and Crash Investigation Units seen combing the area for clues.

“For somebody to strike a pedestrian, not stop and offer assistance, is very poor, abhorrent behaviour,” Superintendent Anthony Boyd said on Friday.

“For a driver of a vehicle to not even check on their welfare and continue on your journey, for whatever reason, is totally unacceptable in anyone’s book.”

Police believe the woman may have been in the country for as long as six months, although they have been unable to contact any family to confirm.

Following inquiries and a public appeal for assistance, police said a 20-year-old man was arrested at a home on Taloma Street in Penrith at about 10.40pm on Friday.

The man was charged with multiple offences, including dangerous driving occasioning death and failing to stop and assist after impact causing death.

He was refused bail and is set to appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.
