Your tools are one of the most crucial elements of your job and without them it’s safe to say you’d be lost. How would you make holes for screws if you didn’t have your trusty drill, and where would you be if your best saw went missing? These are the questions many tradespersons find themselves facing when they fall victim to tool theft.
Tool theft is a serious issue with nearly 11,300 tool thefts were reported in the UK in 2020. The theft of construction and tradespersons’ tools and equipment can have devastating consequences, particularly for those running small businesses and relying on their work alone to maintain their livelihood.
Here, we investigate the UK’s problem with tool theft and what you can do to prevent it.
Why is tool theft happening?
When Aviva conducted their research on tool theft throughout the UK, they found 47% of thefts occurred when a vehicle was left unlocked, while only 19% of thefts involved breaking and entering through a window.
With almost half of the tool theft incidents that occurred in 2020 being entirely preventable, it appears a significant factor in the rise in tool theft is not taking basic security measures. However, the good news is, this means tool theft can be prevented.
Here are some tips to protect yourself and your business from tool theft.
Invest in a good toolbox
Store your tools in a secure toolbox, ideally one with a combination lock. This will make it much harder for a thief to get their hands on your work tools. Another option is to get a tool bag which you can wear, so your tools are with you as you go about your day.
Keep your tools out of sight
As with anything, leaving your belongings in plain sight will make you more vulnerable to theft. If you need to leave your tools in your van or workshop, ensure they are stored out of sight so as not to tempt a thief. Small items can be tucked under car seats, while larger tools or toolboxes can be covered with a jacket or blanket.
Obtain tool insurance
As a business owner, your tools are extremely valuable and not having access to them could impede your ability to work or take on new projects. No matter how many precautions you take, there’s no way to guarantee you won’t be affected by tool theft, so insure your tools and equipment to protect you and your business.
Lock your vehicle
Research proves that unlocked vehicles are more likely to be targeted. Keep in mind that even if you hide your tools out of sight a thief could still strike, so be sure to lock up, even if you’re only leaving for a few minutes.
