The San Francisco 49ers’ injury woes just keep getting worse.
On Monday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that star WR Brandon Aiyuk’s season was officially over after an MRI revealed he suffered a torn ACL and MCL in Sunday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The injury occurred in the final minute of the second quarter after Aiyuk made a catch at the Chiefs’ 14-yard line. Aiyuk got hit by two Chiefs defenders on the play and stayed down on the field after the tackle.
San Francisco’s medical staff attended to him on the field before he was eventually helped onto a cart and brought back to the team’s locker room.
After the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that the team feared Aiyuk had suffered a torn ACL.
The 26-year-old receiver will finish the 2024 season with 25 catches for 374 yards in seven games.
Ahead of the season, the Reno, Nev., native signed a four-year, $120 million extension to remain with the 49ers. He was named to the second All-Pro team for the first time last season.
Aiyuk’s injury is another blow to a 3-4 49ers team that has already been without star RB Christian McCaffrey for the entirety of the season with an Achilles injury.
