Prince Charles appears to fall asleep during republic ceremony in Barbados

Prince Charles has been caught on camera appearing to fall asleep during a ceremony marking Barbados becoming a republic.

The 73-year-old was filmed closing his eyes as his head began to droop before he woke and quickly sat back up in his seat.

Charles had flown to the small Caribbean nation to be there as it removed removed Queen Elizabeth II as head of state with a spectacular ceremony at the stroke of midnight on Wednesday.

During the ceremony, the island’s former governor general Sandra Mason was sworn in as the country’s first president.

Charles had earlier delivered a speech saying the creation of the republic “offers a new beginning” for the nation.

“From the darkest days of our past and the appalling atrocity of slavery which forever stains our history, people of this island forged their path with extraordinary fortitude,” he said

The Queen also sent a message to the people of Barbados, being unable to visit in person.

She sent her “warmest good wishes for your happiness, peace and prosperity in the future’ and said that the nation had a “special place” in her heart for “its vibrant culture, its sporting prowess, and its natural beauty”.

Music superstar Rihanna was also present at the ceremony, where she was made a National Hero.
