Musk shares election misinformation: Michigan official

(NewsNation) — Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson says she’s fighting misinformation being spread online by Elon Musk.

“I hope to debunk some of the agenda-driven misinformation that’s out there by simply providing the data for everyone to see,” Benson told NewsNation’s Markie Martin on “Morning in America” on Thursday.

Musk has frequently shared misleading and false claims about the 2024 election, going as far as to pick a fight with Benson.

Social media feud over misinformation

The two have had a series of exchanges on Musk’s platform, X. Musk accused Michigan of having more registered voters than eligible citizens. Benson shot back clarifying federal laws and not to “feed the trolls.”

In response to all the misinformation, Benson and other Michigan officials have set up a website for people to fact-check all of the different conspiracy theories they might come across.

“Transparency is our front and so we are posting the data, the raw numbers, every day,” Benson said. “People can see the actual numbers for themselves from the very data file that is at the forefront of our elections in our state.”:

Benson said she hopes that this information helps debunk some of the misinformation being spread.

Full confidence in election system

The secretary of state said she has full confidence in the election system, saying it has time-tested security layers in place to ensure the integrity of the voting process.

“We really want everyone, no matter who you’re voting for or where or how you choose to participate to have faith in the process and participate,” Benson said.

So far, over two million Michigan citizens have voted in this year’s election, and Benson said she is hopeful to see that number double, if not more.
