He was trapped by flash floods on the Landsborough Highway, about 3km west of the tiny country town known for its famous Tambo Teddies.

Unable to see the flooded creek in the dark, the driver and his horse float were swept off the road.

The driver climbed to the roof of his 4WD to await help.

The SES deployed a boat to rescue both the man and his horse safely, with no injuries.

Longreach district disaster coordinator, Inspector Chris Smith, praised the rescue and urged caution during severe weather.

“When it is dark, it is often difficult to see that a road could potentially be hazardous,” Smith said.

“No matter how shallow it may look, it’s not worth risking your life or the lives of emergency services who rescue you.

“It may seem like an inconvenience, but by taking the time you need to seek alternate routes, it may just save your life.”
