Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah makes controversial comments on sexual assault: Were there no rapes during BJP term? – Karnataka News

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sparked controversy for his remarks regarding rape cases in the state. Speaking about a recent gang-rape incident near Bengaluru’s KR Market area, where a 37-year-old woman accused two men of assaulting her and stealing her phone and money, Siddaramaiah asked, “Have there been no rapes during the BJP tenure?”

His comments drew sharp criticism from various political leaders. BJP MLA Ashwath Narayan condemned the Chief Minister’s response, saying: “What kind of justification is he giving on rapes? Dacoity and loot are happening in the state with no fear of anyone. There’s no law and order.”

The incident mentioned to the Chief Minister is regarding an FIR filed, based on the woman’s complaint. While the police registered an FIR and arrested the two men, investigation revealed that the woman had initially agreed to engage in sex with the men for money. The situation, however, escalated into an altercation over payment issues. Despite the development, the police registered a case of rape.

Addressing the issue, Siddaramaiah first asked if there hadn’t been any rape cases during the BJP’s tenure in the state. He then went on to say, “Rape shouldn’t happen. Women should be protected, but in society, there are always bad elements. We will act strongly against them.” He also spoke about the need to revive the principles of equality, harmony, and women empowerment, which he attributed to Mahatma Gandhi.

Priyank Kharge, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, defended the government’s efforts to ensure women’s safety. “We are committed to providing safety to women. Bengaluru is one of the safest cities for working women, according to a recent survey. We will ensure justice in this case and address any lapses,” Kharge said.
