Kanpur: Speeding car driven by minor kills woman, critically injures daughter in Kanpur

A woman died, and her 12-year-old daughter was critically injured after a speeding car driven by a minor boy hit their scooter in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur.

The minor, who was allegedly behind the wheel, was caught by the locals and handed over to the police. Besides, the minor’s father has also been arrested by the Kanpur Police.

The police confirmed that the accused did not have a driving licence. According to sources, the minor had bunked school and was trying to perform stunts in his car along with friends.

CCTV footage of the incident shows a speeding Maruti Ciaz ramming the scooter coming from the opposite direction while the woman and her daughter were trying to make a right turn. The woman was flung into the air and thrown at least 20-30 feet away.

According to eyewitnesses, the car was travelling at a speed of more than 100 km/h and hit two other vehicles apart from the woman’s scooter.

Locals also said that two boys and two girls were present in the car at the time of the accident.

A local resident, Jamna Singh, whose vehicle was also hit by the minor’s car, said, “The car was coming at very high speed and hit the scooter and then rammed my vehicle, which was parked on the roadside. The police arrested one boy, but the girls inside the car fled from the scene”.

The woman’s family called for severe punishment for the accused and stringent measures to prevent minors from driving vehicles.

The victim’s sister told India Today, “She was returning from the hospital after consulting for her daughter. She had a helmet on, but she still sustained a head injury and was bleeding. Her lungs were also damaged. Locals caught one boy and handed him to the police, while another boy and two others escaped.”

The woman’s father said there should be stringent laws to prevent this from happening. “We have filed an FIR, and the probe is ongoing. Never give a vehicle to minors; don’t allow them to drive. We demand punishment for them and steps to prevent this from happening again,” the father said.
