The Indian Army celebrated the 100th birthday of World War 2 veteran Lance Naik (Retired) Charan Singh at his home in Ropar district in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday.
Born on September 7, 1924, Singh started his career with the Army at Firozepur Cantonment on August 26, 1942, when he was enrolled into the Army, the Army said in a statement.
He served with the Army Service Corps during World War 2. His service took him from Singapore to Lahore and finally to Yol Cantonment in Himachal Pradesh.
Singh received the Burma Star Award and the Indian Independence Medal during his tenure in the Army. He retired from the Army on May 17, 1959, after 17 years of service. He is currently residing in Dekwala village in Ropar with his four sons and two daughters. A Brigadier’s lead team joined the birthday celebrations in Himachal Pradesh along with Singh’s family
“This continuous engagement is unique to the Army’s enduring ethos of loyalty and camaraderie, ensuring that the sacrifices and legacies of veterans like Lance Naik Charan Singh are honoured and remembered,” the army said in a statement.
“We must remember that our veterans are yesterday’s soldiers, who have not just served the nation but have set standards of dedication and sacrifice for all soldiers and citizens alike. Celebrating Lance Naik Charan Singh’s centennial is a way for the Indian Army to convey that once a soldier, always a soldier, forever a part of the Army family,” it added.
