Hero Moto loses top spot, TVS is second

Mumbai: There’s been a brutal shake-up in the pecking order in India’s two-wheeler market. For the first-time ever, Hero Moto Corp – which has traditionally been the no.1 in the domestic market – has been unseated and pushed to a distant third position by TVS Motor Co, show monthly sales dispatches to dealers by two-wheeler manufacturers.

This includes sales of internal combustion engine models (ICE) in the domestic and export markets and electric two-wheelers.

TVS Motor sold a total of 403,976 units in February 2025, up 9.6% year-on-year. Sales at Hero MotoCorp, which was unseated by Honda Motorcycle and Scooters India from the pole position, declined 17.2% yoy to 388,068 units in the same period.

It’s the first-time ever that TVS has outsold Hero MotoCorp in monthly sales. TVS raced ahead of Hero MotoCorp even though it wasn’t a month of record monthly volumes for the maker of Ntorq scooters and Apache motorcycles.

Growfast

The Chennai-based company, with a prancing horse as its logo, grew at the fastest pace among all two-wheeler manufacturers during a month when all its rivals in the mainstream scooter and motorcycle market saw the dispatches decline or remain in low single-digits amid soft demand in the domestic market. TVS rode high on the back of a brisk 26% growth in exports to 124,993 units in February from 98,856 units a year ago. Its e-scooter sales also advanced at a fast clip with 24,017 units, up 34% yoy.
