He died on May 6 from bile duct cancer, with which he was diagnosed in December 2023.
Gelder’s husband Ben Daniels, 59, said his heart was “broken into a million pieces” for his partner of more than 30 years.
“It is with huge huge sadness and a heavy heart broken into a million pieces that I’m leaving this post to announce the passing of my darling husband and life partner Ian Gelder,” Daniels wrote on Instagram on Wednesday.
“I’d stopped all work to be his carer but neither of us had any idea that it would all be so fast.”
He called Gelder his “absolute rock”.
“If we weren’t together we spoke to each other every day,” Daniels said.
“He was the kindest, most generous spirited and loving human being. He was a wonderful, wonderful actor and everyone who worked with him was touched by his heart and light.
“I honestly don’t know what I’ll do without him by my side. He coped with his dreadful illness with such bravery, with no self-pity. Ever.
“He was remarkable and will be so missed.”
Daniels then explained the photo he posted on Instagram — a selfie of the couple in front of their Christmas tree.
“This pic was taken at Christmas time after I’d got him out of hospital and even though he’d gone through the worst three weeks there you can still see his joy and love shining through.
“Rest well my sweet Chianni.”
Bile duct cancer is a rare and aggressive form of cancer, forming in the slender tubes that carry bile, the digestive fluid into the liver, according to Mayo Clinic.
It is often diagnosed when the cancer is advanced, making successful treatment difficult to achieve.
Daniels is also known for roles in the series The Exorcist, Jupiter’s Legacy and Law & Order: London.
His other credits include Doctor Who, Fifteen-Love, and His Dark Materials.
Gelder’s agent DPA Management wrote on X that it was a “pleasure to represent Ian Gelder for the latter part of his career.
“The world will be a lesser place without him in it. Ian was such a lovely person and a wonderful actor.
“I know he will be hugely missed by all those that loved him and worked alongside him.”
Gelder appeared in 12 episodes of Game of Thrones as Kevan Lannister, the younger brother of Lord Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) and one of his most loyal and trusted officers in the Lannister armies.
