The Chicago Blackhawks will not have a captain for the upcoming NHL season.
General manager Kyle Davidson told reporters on Tuesday that the team will not put a “C” on the jersey of any player in 2023-24 and instead will have a group of assistant captains.

The team has a vacancy after long-time captain Jonathan Toews left the team. Toews had been Chicago’s captain since 2008, leading the team to three Stanley Cup titles during that time.
Chicago selected phenom Connor Bedard No. 1 overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, and the team’s decision not to choose a captain this season could be seen as a sign that Bedard might take over the role sooner rather than later.
Bedard turned 18 in July.
Connor McDavid became the youngest captain in NHL history when he given the letter by the Edmonton Oilers on Oct. 16, 2016. McDavid was 19 years and 266 days old when he donned the “C.”
The Blackhawks finished at the bottom of the Central Division last season, with a record of 26-49-7.
