Buccaneers coach: Tom Brady away from team dealing with personal matter

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said star quarterback Tom Brady is dealing with a personal matter and will be away from the team until at least after their pre-season game against the Tennessee Titans next Saturday.

Bowles addressed reporters Thursday after Brady missed practice for the second time this week.

The Bucs begin their pre-season schedule Saturday against the Miami Dolphins.

Veteran quarterback Blaine Gabbert, longtime backup Ryan Griffin and sophomore Kyle Trask will handle snaps during Brady’s absence.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion Brady, who turned 45 last week, is returning for a 23rd season in the NFL after initially announcing his retirement before changing his mind.

After winning the Super Bowl during his first year with Tampa Bay, Brady and the Bucs lost to the eventual champion Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round of the playoffs last season.

Bowles was named head coach of the Bucs in March after Bruce Arians switched roles to senior football consultant.
