Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva on Monday said that the new Chief Minister of Delhi would not stay at the “Sheesh Mahal” which was key to the party’s campaign against AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi elections.
Sachdeva urged Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to revoke the merger of four properties with the “Sheesh Mahal” (6, Flagstaff Road). He claimed that the CM’s bungalow was expanded by merging four government properties.
“The next Chief Minister of Delhi will not stay in it (the bungalow),” Sachdeva said, adding that the BJP-led government will take a call on what to do with the property.
The renovated bungalow was Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence as Delhi’s chief minister from 2015 until October 2024, when he vacated it after resigning amid corruption allegations from the BJP.
However, in the last few years, the luxurious reconstruction of the bungalow caught everyone’s attention, especially the BJP, who named it “Sheesh Mahal.” The party also accused Kejriwal of hypocrisy, contrasting his public image as a “common man” with his alleged private indulgence in luxury at the public’s expense.
Rohini MLA Writes To L-G
Newly elected BJP MLA from Rohini and former Leader of Opposition, Vijender Gupta, addressed a letter to the Lieutenant Governor, urging the immediate restoration of the chief minister’s official residence to its original condition and the removal of alleged encroachments on adjacent government properties.
In his letter, Gupta accused Kejriwal of turning his official residence into a “sheesh mahal” funded by public money. He claimed that Kejriwal expanded the property from 10,000 square meters to over 50,000 square meters by illegally annexing surrounding government properties, including eight Type-V flats at 45 and 47 Rajpur Road and government bungalows at 8A and 8B Flagstaff Road.
Gupta called this expansion both illegal and unethical, claiming it was done without proper permission or adherence to legal procedures.
It comes after the BJP won 48 of 70 Assembly seats in the Delhi elections, ending AAP’s decade-long rule in the capital. Significantly, the BJP will form a government in the national capital after a hiatus of 27 years.
