A massive cache of explosives and warlike stores was seized in Mizoram during a major joint operation by the Assam Rifles and state police, officials said on Thursday.
Two individuals were also arrested in connection with the operation targeting the illegal trafficking of hazardous materials in the region, the officials added.
Acting on a tip-off about suspicious activity, the authorities conducted a special checking drive along the Serchhip-Thenzawl route, where they intercepted a vehicle carrying the two suspects and the cache of ammunition.
An inspection of the vehicle revealed a concealed stockpile of explosive materials, including 9,600 gelatin sticks, 9,400 detonators, and over 1,800 meters of cordtex, a type of detonating cord.
Officials noted that the volume and nature of the recovered items raised serious concerns, suggesting possible large-scale illegal operations or militant activity in the region.
The two suspects were detained on the spot, and the seized explosives were handed over to the Mizoram Police for further investigation and legal action, they said.
Intelligence inputs indicated that the route had been used for the clandestine movement of dangerous materials, with its remote and challenging terrain making surveillance difficult.
