49ers end contract dispute with 11-time Pro Bowler

The San Francisco 49ers now have all of their key offensive players in place for the 2024 NFL season.

Less than a week after ending an extended contract dispute with star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers ended another contract holdout on Tuesday by agreeing to terms with left tackle Trent Williams.

It is a three-year contract for Williams that will pay him $82.66 million, including $48 million in guarantees.

As important as it was for the 49ers to get Aiyuk re-signed and back into the mix this season, the Williams signing is perhaps even more important given his impact along the team’s offensive line and his importance to the team.

Williams is not only the 49ers’ best offensive lineman, but he is one of the best offensive lineman in football and arguably one of the league’s best overall players. It is also a position where the 49ers are thinnest in terms of depth. Williams is one of the few truly elite players they have along their offensive line, and he is essential part of both their running game and protecting quarterback Brock Purdy’s blindside. The drop-off from him to his backup would have been substantial — and not one that would have been easy to overcome had they not worked out a new contract with him.

With this new deal, Williams will earn $27 million during the 2024 season, up from the $20 million he was originally scheduled to play under. He will, however, lose $2 million in fines for all of the missed time in training camp and the preseason due to his holdout.

Williams has been named to 11 consecutive Pro Bowls and has been a first-team All-Pro in each of the past three seasons.

He joined the 49ers prior to the 2020 season and has been a rock on their offensive line ever since.
